Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) has gained huge fame since 1862 when Mexico defeated the French at Puebla. Today Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with good friends and even better food. But if you’re committed to your health and wellne
ss, you may shy away from traditional Cinco de Mayo fare. With a few simple modifications, you can celebrate this Cinco de Mayo the healthy way!
Fajitas can be a fantastic, well-rounded meal all on their own. The key is to use lean meats, increase veggies, and go easy on the toppings. Sounds easy enough, right? Right! With our easy HOMEMADE FAJITAS prepared with skirt steak or round steak, you can still eat festively AND save money.
If you’re
looking for a way to spice up your fiesta, try serving traditional SPANISH RICE. Our recipe uses easy ingredients that make prep a breeze. Try using half brown rice to pump of the fiber and whole grains of this classic side dish.
No Cinco de Mayo celebration would be complete without GUACAMOLE. Avocados are rich in
heart healthy monounsaturated fats – and it’s the only fruit that contains any fat at all! They also contain vital nutrients and phytochemicals, but they can be a high calorie addition if you don’t watch your portion size. Get the most out of your avocados by choosing firm avocados that yield to gentle pressure and are free of dark, mushy spots. If you want to buy avocados ahead of time, place un-ripened avocados in a paper bag and leave at room temperature. To speed the process, add an apple or banana to the bag – these fruits produce natural ethylene gas, which promotes ripening.
If you plan to partake in a spirited Cinco de Mayo, be wary of your margarita. Margaritas can harbor anywhere from 150-700 calories in just one cocktail. But, with the SKINNY MARGARITA, you can still savor a cocktail for around 100 calories. These margaritas are made more like a martini, but you can blend them or serve them on the rocks for a lower calorie end to your fiesta.
Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate traditional Mexican dishes with your amigos. Make sure to stay on track towards your health and wellness goals by follow CentsAble Health’s tips and healthy ideas.
