Supporting Communities

Fareway is proud to support our communities! We are involved with many organizations, fundraisers and events dedicated to helping those in need because at Fareway, you're family.

Caring for the Places We Work and Live

Customers tell us they love Fareway's small-town feel, even when our stores are located in larger cities. They like knowing that when they have a question or concern, they don't just speak with the "manager," they talk with Jeff (or Don or Angie, or any of our fantastic grocery and meat market managers).

But true community involvement goes beyond knowing customers on a first-name basis. Fareway employees have earned a reputation for being solid, ethical citizens who are an asset to the communities in which they live. The idea of helping our friends and neighbors forms the foundation of two of our company values:

  • We support and partner with local businesses, communities and farmers.
  • We donate time and resources to charitable organizations both large and small.

It's why you'll find fresh fruits and vegetables grown by area farmers in our produce section whenever possible. It's why you'll see Jeff (or Don or Angie) helping to build a playground at a local school or volunteering for a church food drive. And it's why we support several worthwhile charities who are working to make a difference in all of our hometowns.

Fareway's favorite causes

Over the years, Fareway has quietly sponsored or contributed to a wide variety of charitable organizations. While we prefer to remain behind the scenes, we're happy to shine the spotlight on these deserving groups. Click on the links to learn more about them and the important things they're doing and discover how you might be able to help.

Variety Club

Variety, the Children's Charity is dedicated to improving the lives of children in our communities. The organization grants money to over 80 different Iowa charities every year, and their programs range from sponsoring children to attend diabetes and cancer survivor camps to building surgical suites specifically designed for tiny infants.

Muscular Dystrophy Association

MDA is a voluntary health agency, a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. They provide worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.

Toys for Tots

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community. The goal is to deliver a message of hope and motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.

Little Hands on the Farm

This unique Iowa State Fair attraction teaches children the importance of agriculture and how it affects their daily lives in a fun and interactive way. Children ages 2 to 10 become farmers at this free, hands-on exhibit that includes a garden, grain bin, apple orchard, chicken coop, tractor shed, sheep barn and dairy barn.

National Guard

Today, tens of thousands of Guard members are serving in harm's way around the world, as well as protecting the life and property of people right here at home. In 2008, Fareway received the 5-star Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve. This is the highest honor the Department of Defense can bestow on an employer.

The Thanksgiving Tree

Organized by Fareway and KDSM FOX 17, The Thanksgiving Tree is a project that encourages Fareway shoppers statewide to bring non-perishable food items to the stores in November to help make the holidays merry for needy families in their communities.
