Research Shows Lean Beef can be Good for Heart Health

Big news for beef lovers! A recent study called BOLD (Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet), conducted by researchers at The Pennsylvania State University, shows that eating lean beef every day can reduce risk factors for heart disease, including lowering total and LDL “bad” cholesterol.

A study at Penn State was conducted comparing a diet with lean beef to a traditional heart healthy diet and fond that participants who consumed 5.4 ounces of lean beef daily lowered their total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol by 10% in 5 weeks.

Lean beef is a perfect pairing—easily served with vegetables, grains and dairy—while maximizing the nutrients needed to keep your body healthy. In addition to being delicious, lean beef can be an everyday solution to building a heart-healthy diet.

Toys for Tots

http://www.fareway.com/news.cfm?action=article&id=c0141cff-42d8-45bf-9749-fd4be9bd6ca0

The US Marine Corps Toys for Tots program was a huge success this past year. The US Marines collected over 45,000 new/unwrapped toys and were able to provide at least 2 toys per child to over 18,000 children in need during the holiday season.

“This has been a tremendous year for Toys for Tots. The amount of funds raised and toys collected this year really surpassed our expectations. The amount of support this campaign gets year after year from our community clearly demonstrates that the collective effort of the community can make a big difference in a lot of children’s lives” said 1st Sergeant Brandon Eckardt, who has been leading the Des Moines’ campaign for two years. “The community pulled together and helped us raise over $150,000 this past year, which was a huge asset to the campaign and will be a big benefit as we go into next year’s holiday season.”

Each year KCCI hosts a variety of events and fundraisers to benefit Toys for Tots. One of the community’s favorites is the Nadas’ Not So Silent Night concert performed by the Nadas each December at Hoyt Sherman Place and the Station’s Toys for Tots Tuesday program, which is usually the 2nd Tuesday in December. Amanda Hull, General Sales Manager at KCCI had this to say, “This year our phone bank, which starts at 5 a.m. and goes until 7 p.m. raised over $21,000. These funds are used to purchase toys for the older children we serve (the 10-14 year olds) as well as infants and toddlers (the 0-3 age group). Sports equipment, craft kits, mp3 players and a wide variety of toys suitable for very young children are typical purchases for these age groups. It is important that all children get the opportunity and experience to receive gifts relevant to their age on Christmas morning.”

Toys for Tots History: The organization began in 1947, when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The idea came from Bill’s wife, Diane, and today is a nationwide campaign that has spanned over 62 years. Through its history, the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots program has distributed more than 400 million toys to more than 188 million children in need. This charitable endeavor has made the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots program the unchallenged leader in looking after less fortunate children at Christmas.

Nearly 1 in 5 Americans call a rural community home. However, these small towns, farming communities and frontier areas face unique health care issues-a lack of healthcare providers, increased aging population suffering from chronic diseases and a large percentage of under- or un-insured citizens.

National Rural Health Day, held the 3rd Thursday of every November, brings to light the unique healthcare challenges faced by rural America and gives credit to the “can do” spirit that keeps them going.

We're proud to support Toys for Tots by collecting new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community.

The toy drive at this year's Iowa State v. Oklahoma State football game raised $1,748 and over 300 toys! The cash collected will go to buy the toys needed to fill the requests this year.

Toys for tots began in 1947, when Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The idea came form Bill’s wife, Diane. In the fall of 1947, Diane crafted a homemade doll and asked Bill to deliver the doll to an organization, which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When Bill determined that no agency existed, Diane told Bill that he should start one. He did. The 1947 pilot project was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign.

That year, Marine Corps Reserve units across the nation conducted Toys for Tots campaigns in each community in which a Marine Reserve Center was located. Marines have conducted successful nationwide campaigns at Christmas each year since 1948. The initial objective that remains the hallmark of the program today is to “bring the joy of Christmas to America’s needy children”. Bill Hendricks, a Marine Reservist on weekends, was in civilian life, the Director of Public Relations for Warner Brothers Studio. This enabled him to convince a vast array of celebrities to support Toys for Tots.

In 1948, Walt Disney designed the Toys for Tots logo, which we use today. Disney also designed the first Toys for Tots poster used to promote the nationwide program. Nat “King” Cole, Peggy Lee and Vic Damone recorded the Toys for Tots theme composed by Sammy Fain and Paul Webster in 1956. Bob Hope, John Wayne, Doris Day, Lorrie Morgan, Tim Allen, Kenny Rogers and Billy Ray Cyrus are but

Boone, Iowa: Fareway Stores, Inc. is excited to announce it has purchased property in Sioux City, Iowa, to replace its existing facility located at 2328 Transit Avenue. The replacement store will be located approximately three miles away in the Regency Plaza at 4267 Sergeant Road in the former Toys “R” Us space.

Fareway joined the Sioux City community in 1982. For nearly 30 years, Fareway has been dedicated to offering local residents a full service meat department , farm-fresh produce, low, competitive prices, remarkably clean stores, and highly personalized “to your car” carry-out service. In achieving this mission, the overwhelming support from the community has shown our current leased facility of 20,400 square feet to be too small. In addition to recent remodeling of other Sioux City Fareway’s, our new store will be expanded to approximately 38,000 square feet in order to offer a larger meat case and produce area, additional grocery varieties and selection, while still maintaining the same great customer service and competitive prices you have grown to expect from Fareway.

Our intent is to begin working with the appropriate parties immediately, with hope the new store will open in 2012. We want to thank our current landlord for his professionalism and relationship over the years and wish him the best of luck. We are working to accommodate our employees wishing to work in the new store. We also anticipate hiring additional employees.
Tyson Foods and Fareway Team Up to Fight Hunger in Iowa

http://www.fareway.com/news.cfm?action=article&id=102f5684-83d7-4711-bdea-c050d09229ea

DES MOINES, Iowa – March 31, 2011 – Tyson Foods and Fareway Stores today donated 33,000 pounds of boneless chicken to the Food Bank of Iowa as part of an effort to feed people in need and promote public awareness of hunger in America.

“There are millions of hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are faced with the realities of hunger and malnourishment,” said John Tyson, chairman of Tyson Foods. “We are trying to make a difference in their lives by providing nutrient-rich protein and by increasing understanding of hunger in our country.”

Meat and poultry are nutrient dense foods and, according to health experts, can be especially helpful to people who need more protein including growing children, pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone undergoing severe stress disease or disability. According to food banks nationwide, meat is the most requested and least available food.

“For the last 73 years, Fareway Stores, Inc. is proud to call Iowa home. Fareway Stores feels fortunate to be able to help fellow Iowans in need during these difficult economic times,” said Fred Greiner, president and chief operating officer of Fareway. “We hope this collective effort between Fareway and Tyson Foods helps individuals and family's meet their daily needs and give them hope of a better future.”

The Food Bank of Iowa distributes more than 6 million pounds of food annually throughout its 42 county service area. Approximately 100,000 residents, including children and seniors, receive emergency food assistance each year from the Food Bank of Iowa and its 285 partner agencies.

We are thrilled to receive this high quality donation from Tyson Foods and Fareway Stores,” said Carey Miller, Executive Director of the Food Bank of Iowa. “As the need for food assistance continues to increase, this contribution will help ensure that we can assist more individuals in need.”

Tyson Foods has been an active participant in the fight against hunger for a decade, donating more than 78 million pounds of protein, or the equivalent of 300 million meals. The company partners with Share Our Strength, Lift Up America, Feeding America, the League of United Latin American Citizens to raise awareness and help feed the hungry across the nation.

The company’s current “KNOW Hunger” campaign is focused on helping more people understand and join the effort to eliminate hunger in America. It currently involves the recent release of a study on public perceptions of hunger, as well as a commitment to donate one million pounds of protein to 37 food banks during the month of March.

Tyson and the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) recently commissioned a study on public perceptions of hunger. Among other things, it found that most surveyed believe hunger is a much smaller problem in their own community than it is in the state or the nation overall. Yet, 24% of those surveyed worry they will have trouble putting food on the table this year. Survey details are available at www.tysonfoods.com/Media-Room.aspx.

Iowa sweet corn delivered to National Guard soldiers

http://www.fareway.com/news.cfm?action=article&id=5b6666ab-6373-4128-8f53-625e4f66121c

400 dozen ears of Iowa sweet corn delivered to National Guard soldiers at Camp Shelby

by O. Kay Henderson on September 2, 2010

in Agriculture,Business & Economy,Military,Politics & Government

Iowa Congressman Bruce Braley husks sweet corn with Iowa Guard soldiers.

Thousands of ears of sweet corn were delivered to the Army base in Mississippi where Iowa National Guard troops are training before heading off to duty in Afghanistan.

Congressman Bruce Braley of Waterloo arranged to have 400 dozen ears of Iowa sweet corn delivered there yesterday so the Iowa soldiers could have one more taste of Iowa before they deploy.

“I grew up in Iowa loving sweet corn and watching the huge amount that was delivered down here makes me very hungry for dinnertime,” Braley said during a telephone interview with Radio Iowa.

Braley got the idea while visiting Iraq with a congressman from Mississippi this past December. Braley participated in “Operation Gumbo Drop” which involved the two congressmen helping to serve 7500 pounds of gumbo and shrimp to Mississippi National Guard soldiers on duty at a base north of Baghdad.

“That’s when I decided if I ever had the opportunity, I wanted to do something similar for the Iowa National Guard,” Braley said. “My office staff worked with a group of great Iowans to help put this all together.”

Congressman Bruce Braley and Fred Greiner, president & COO of Fareway Stores

Fareway Stores donated a truck and the truck’s driver donated his time to drive the sweet corn south. The Iowa Farm Bureau, several eastern Iowa veterans organizations as well as individual Iowans contributed corn, some melons and money to the effort.

“So it’s just a great example of Iowans working together to try to provide a little taste of Iowa for some brave men and women who deserve a little tasty treat,” Braley said.

Braley spoke with Radio Iowa at about a quarter ’til four yesterday afternoon — and he was heading back to the “mess” to help prepare for the evening’s sweet corn feed. “I personally was involved in husking a large amount of sweet corn and there’s still a lot more to be husked before dinner time,” Braley said, with a laugh.

About three dozen Iowa business owners were at the camp, too, part of a delegation flown there by the military.

Iowa Business Council executive director Elliott Smith was among the group that arrived at Camp Shelby on Tuesday. ”It’s really a remarkable experience,” Smith said during a telephone interview.

”We’ve seen how they handle check-points, how they deal with local Afghans. They actually have native Afghans here speaking the language to really simulate, as closely as possible, the encounters they’ll have with villagers and elders.”

The Iowa Business Council’s executive director, along with nearly 40 Iowa business owners, made a 36-hour trip, and got back to Iowa yesterday. “We’ve all been hugely impressed with just the rigor and the enthusiasm and the motivation here,” Smith said about an hour before the Iowans left Camp Shelby. “They’re doing a great job.”

Some of the business owners on the trip have workers who are on leave from their job because they’ve been called to active duty. “Actually some folks came down here with lists of employees or even family members that are down here right now training and we’ve been crossing paths with them periodically,” Smith said. “It’s been fun to watch the reaction when we find people we know.”

Almost 3000 Iowa National Guard soldiers are at Camp Shelby, then they’ll ship out to a base in California before leaving for Afghanistan.

Braley’s office released a list of businesses, organizations and individuals who helped make the shipment of corn and watermelon possible. It includes:

Mescher Wins Iowa Best Bagger Contest by Slimmest of Margins

http://www.fareway.com/news.cfm?action=article&id=bb0bd99e-80fb-49ee-87eb-05501adf7e24

One point. That’s all that separated Tim Hannan and Jeremy Mescher at the end of the 2010 Iowa Best Bagger Contest.
And it was that single point that determined which of the Fareway Stores employees would be crowned champion of the 23rd annual competition August 13 at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.

“This may have been the closest contest we’ve had in the history of the Iowa Best Bagger Contest,” said Jerry Fleagle, president of the Iowa Grocery Industry Association, which hosts the event. “Our scorers calculated the numbers two and three times just to make sure the math was correct. It was that close.”

Hannan and Mescher mirrored each other throughout the competition, particularly in the two championship heats. Their times where nearly identical – only 0.68 seconds separated their two championship round times – and their weight distribution and style were equally impressive, aside from a couple points.

When all the judging was complete and points were totaled, it was Mescher who was pronounced the winner.

“It’s just kind of disbelief to start with and then excitement,” said Mescher, who placed third in the 2008 competition. “Two years ago, I struggled with one of the plastic sacks that didn’t want to open. So I was just trying to make sure I had everything in order as far as the sacks coming out right and getting everything in there as fast as possible.”

Mescher, an employee at the Fareway store in Spirit Lake, earned a first place prize of $500 cash. He will now represent the state of Iowa at the 2011 National Best Bagger Contest in Las Vegas in February, with a chance to win an additional $10,000. The 25-year-old Dyersville native will attempt to become the sixth Iowan to win a national championship and first since 2000. All five previous national winners were also Fareway employees

“You can prepare for it as much as you want. But, in the end, you just do the best you can do,” Mescher said. “One of my friends (Brian Beneke) was the one who won two years ago, so I’m sure I’ll be talking with him to see how everything goes, what the emotions are like and how everything progresses there.”

Hannan has now placed in the last three Iowa Best Bagger Contests. The 41-year-old, who currently works at the Fareway on S.E. 22nd Street in Des Moines, took second in front of Mescher in 2008 and finished third in last year’s competition. He was awarded a second place prize of $250.

Rounding out the finalists were Kyle Hovden (third), Kelly Anderson (fourth) and Karla Quant (fifth). Hovden, of the Fareway in Boone, walked away with $150 one year after earning second place. Anderson and Quant, who both work for Hy-Vee in Des Moines and Windsor Heights, respectively, were each awarded $100 for making it to the championship round.

A total of 18 individuals took part in the annual event, which was celebrating its 23rd anniversary. Contestants bagged identical grocery orders consisting of approximately 40 commonly purchased items into three plastic grocery bags. They were scored and ranked primarily on speed and weight distribution between bags, but individual style and proper item arrangement were also taken into account.

Reusable bags were used this year in the Iowa Best Bagger Contest for the second time. They were incorporated into the final, which was expanded from one heat to two – one with plastic bags and one with reusables.

The event was sponsored by the Iowa Grocery Industry Association, National Grocers Association, Coca-Cola North America, Midwest Packaging/Hilex Poly, Roberts Dairy, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Cookies Food Products and City Carton Recycling.

All the non-perishable food items used in the competition were donated to the Food Bank of Iowa in Des Moines.
