Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic Important Updates

Fareway Meat and Grocery is a growing Midwest grocery store. Fareway currently operates 123 grocery store locations in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Fareway holds family values in the highest regard, demonstrating integrity, fairness, and honesty in relationships with customers, employees, vendors, and suppliers. That being said, customer and employee safety is one of our top priorities.

On July 25th, the Iowa Governor’s Emergency Declaration expired. Fareway will not be accepting containers for redemption in its Iowa stores. Health authorities continue to advise that COVID-19 and other viruses are transmitted through respiratory droplets. Accepting potentially contaminated containers inside our stores presents a great risk of harm to the health and safety of our employees and customers.

In addition, Iowa law requires grocery stores to meet health and food safety guidelines for all employees and customers.  Allowing used containers to be returned in our stores puts our employees and customers at risk. This risk runs into the many safety and sanitation initiatives we have implemented in order to keep people safe.

Each Fareway grocery store has posted a notice listing nearby redemption centers, where customers may redeem bottles and cans. We encourage redemption efforts to be spent on businesses and/or area non-profits that provide outside collection bins for donation.

Our sanitation efforts and actions in rejecting container redemption inside our stores is to minimize potential harm to the communities we serve. At the same time we are offering our customers alternative redemption options.

Until further notice, all Fareway stores and meat markets will be open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. The early closure will provide for additional cleaning and sanitation measures in our stores, as well as time for restocking inventory.

The first hour of business from 8 – 9 a.m. will be reserved for customers at an increased risk to COVID-19. This includes anyone 65 and over, those with a chronic medical condition, expecting mothers, and anyone with an underlying medical condition. We appreciate the advance cooperation from our customers in respecting the hour reserved for those that are at higher risk.
