  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 1 cup bell pepper, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 Tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 cup reduced sodium soy sauce

Sloppy Joes are a staple of midwest cuisine. From weddings to birthday parties and everything in between, try this basic Sloppy Joe sandwich.


Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, bell pepper and garlic. Sauté until tender, about 4–5 minutes.

Add ground beef and cook until browned and cooked through, about 7 minutes.

Add the remaining ingredients to the skillet and stir to combine.

Continue cooking until the sauce has thickened and warmed through.
