The world has changed a lot since we first opened our doors in 1938, and sometimes things change so rapidly you never know what will be coming next. At Fareway, we take pride in the fact that the way we do business will never change as long as our doors are open. Our family-oriented approach to how we treat customers and employees alike, is what sets us apart in the world of 24/7 retailers.

Fareway was built on the principle of treating our customers, employees, vendors and suppliers like they are a part of our family. Common courtesies like greeting you at the door, helping you find everything you’re looking for, and walking you out to your car are simple ways that we let you know you matter to us. We strive to make your grocery shopping trip the easiest, most enjoyable part of your day.

Our founding families believed in the powerful influence of “a day of rest” on family, health, and ultimately, success. Our employees work hard six days a week to bring you the best service and quality groceries. A day off allows them to spend time with their families, relax and attend worship if they so choose. Fareway will not be open on Sunday, but on Monday, we will be open refreshed, anxious to serve you and grateful for your patronage.

Founder Paul S. Beckwith set a standard for his company by instilling these principles into his first employees and now, over 75 years later, our Fareway stores have been a resounding success. Offering competitive prices, excellent customer service, and quality products are easy ways to earn customers and keep them coming back. He believed that treating people the “Fare Way” was the best way to earn the trust and business of anyone who wanted a better way of shopping for groceries.

Our dedication to these values shines especially bright through our famous meat counter. Fareway's reputation for having the best quality meats (at the best prices, we might add) also stems directly from our founder, Paul S. Beckwith, who was a meat supervisor at another grocery chain before starting Fareway. His determination to offer the highest quality meats, even when opting for lesser cuts would have meant more profit, still guides everything we do. Today fresh cuts of USDA Choice beef and all natural pork and chicken fill our meat case and our meat experts are always available to make sure any request or order is met with a friendly smile and quick service.

In addition to the USDA standards, we make sure to adhere to our strict principles of the Fareway Meat Counter:

  • Never Stale. We cut all our meat daily to ensure you get the exact cut and quality you are looking for when you approach the counter.

  • Never Gassed. While other stores may treat their meats with chemicals to keep old meats looking fresh, we will never fake the quality of our meats ensuring you get the freshness you’re looking for in every bite.

  • Never Injected. Some stores inject water solutions into cuts of meat to add weight and plumpness. At the Fareway counter, the cut of meat you see under the glass is the same cut you’ll see on your plate or your bun. 

  • Always Natural. Fareway never adds preservatives to our meat. We know USDA choice beef and all natural pork and chicken is the quality you expect as Fareway shoppers.

Our friendly meat counter is there to make sure that you take home the absolute best cut of meat possible. Whether it’s ribs for a cookout, burgers and brats for the big game, or steaks for the family, you can count on us to give you the same quality we would want to take home.

Our carry out service is our way of saying goodbye and we can’t wait to see you again. Always without tipping, our staff is there to make sure your groceries are loaded safely and you’re sent on your way home with a smile and wave. It is unique in today’s high-speed world but it is something that we enjoy and are more than happy to continue.

Caitlyn graduated from Iowa State University with a BS in Dietetics. She has worked in nutrition at Mid Iowa Community Action and as a clinical dietitian for the Iowa Veterans Home and Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Her goal is to help you and your family develop and maintain healthy lifestyles by sharing creative and practical nutrition tips.
