Fareway Stores, Inc. recently announced that bakery personnel from across the state competed in the Decorated Cake Competition at the Iowa State Fair. Original cake creations in several categories were entered at the competition in Des Moines on Monday.

Dubuque Fareway baker Joyce Dunbar’s creation Mother Nature quite literally took the cake – earning the decorated baker 1st Place in Sugar Artistry. “I was very humbled to learn that I took first place. There’s simply a lot of talent on the floor,” said Dunbar. “To create a cake for the competition takes a lot of time and dedication; it’s a labor of love.” Joyce will be able to add this accolade to her blue-ribbon collection. In 2018, she earned Best in Show and Overall in Commercial Class with her Fairy Garden creation.

“To place in competition at the Iowa State Fair is one of the highest honors,” said Amanda Munson, Fareway Bakery Sales Specialist. “We couldn’t be prouder of Joyce for her continued success, hard work, and commitment to creativity.”

All cakes will be on display in the Elwell Family Food Center through the duration of the Iowa State Fair.
