MidAmerican Energy Company recently recognized the West Des Moines Fareway Store for their efforts in heat recovery. The new store installed a system to capture waste heat from refrigeration system compressors and recycle the heat in order to provide space heating. The initiative realized cost savings in the amount of $126,872 for the store location.

This means of recycled heat allows for electrical units to be in place as back-up or for periods when the amount of available waste heat will not meet the space heating requirements. Heat recovery systems require additional ductwork, an air tunnel and blowers for proper reuse of the saved heat.

The project is expected to save 520,013 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually, which is roughly equivalent to the amount of electricity used last year to power more than 50 average Iowa homes.

“Fareway has long recognized the importance of conserving natural resources and being good stewards of our environment,” said Fred Greiner, President of Fareway Stores Inc. “Since 1955, we’ve reclaimed heat generated by our refrigeration compressors and are making great strides to be sustainable, so we can pass along the savings to our customers.”

“We’re proud to recognize Fareway for their energy efficiency efforts and participation in our program,” said Matt Chancellor, Manager of Key Accounts with MidAmerican Energy. “They’ve done an outstanding job, leading the way in heat recovery and conserving electricity.”

Since January 1, 2011, Fareway has realized a total of $423,767 in energy cost savings. In addition to recycled heat, Fareway has developed other methods for reuse of materials. Today, Fareway recycles:

  • 850,000 pallets per year
  • 12,500 tons of cardboard per year
  • 300 tons of plastic shrink wrap per year
  • 4,500,000 plastic grocery sacks per year
  • 5,000 gallons of waste oil per year
