In late 2012, Fareway Stores and Sparboe Farms joined forces to help feed hungry Iowans with a donation of 19,800 dozen eggs to the Iowa Food Bank Association - that's 237,600 eggs! Pallets of fresh eggs were delivered to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo on Thursday, July 11 and to the Food Bank of Iowa in Des Moines on Friday, July 12.
"Giving back to the community is a core value for Sparboe Farms," says Beth Sparboe Schnell, president of Sparboe Farms. "We are excited to work together with Fareway Stores and the food banks in Iowa to donate nearly 20,000 dozen eggs to the many families in need." This donation is a result of the Fill the Truck campaign, where Sparboe Farms graciously donated one egg for every one dozen that was sold in Fareway stores across the state.
"It is great to have wonderful community partners such as Sparboe Farms and Fareway Stores to help address the issue of hunger in our state," says Cory Berkenes, state director of the Iowa Food Bank Association. "Their commitment to serving the communities in Iowa through this donation is remarkable and is a great example of how collaboration and generosity among organizations can make a difference to nearly 400,000 currently struggling with food insecurity."Fresh eggs are a prized item for food banks due to their dense nutritional and high protein content, but they are also one of the hardest food categories for food banks to acquire.
"Fareway Stores is proud to partner with Sparboe Farms and the Iowa Food Bank Association to provide eggs as a healthy and nutritious dietary option to families in need," says Coby Newbold, director of Dairy & Frozen Purchasing for Fareway Stores. "This has been a rewarding experience for us all." The eggs will be distributed to Iowans through the eight food banks across the state. These include Food Bank of Iowa, HACAP Food Reservoir, Northeast Iowa Food Bank, River Bend Foodbank, Food Bank of the Heartland, Food Bank of Southern Iowa, Food Bank of Siouxland, and St. Stephen's Food Bank.
The Iowa Food Bank Association is a collaborative effort of the eight food banks in Iowa that serve all of its 99 counties.
